In Adelsdorf in Franconia, it doesn't take long to understand that this is carp land. The large-bellied fish can be found on the Adelsdorf crest, on pub signs and hiking maps. There are only a few landscapes that have been as shaped by fish as the Aischgrund between Bamberg and Nuremberg. There are over 7,000 ponds, which are managed by around 1,200 pond farmers, on just a few square kilometres of land. Part of the River Aisch is bordered by individual ponds; in part they have merged together to form extensive chains of ponds.

Only a few landscapes have been as shaped by fish as the Aischgrund.

This unique cultural landscape was formed during the Middle Ages and served just one purpose: to breed as many nutritious carp as possible. These days, it doesn't just attract carp lovers to the Aischgrund, but lots of cyclists and walkers too: The relatively flat water landscape can be easily explored on the good pathways.

It is not surprising that the Gasthof Zum Löwenbräu in Neuhaus, part of the Adelsdorf district, serves carp. But the establishment's long history is surprising: It has been run by the Wirth family for ten generations and 270 years. Besides the guesthouse, the family also owns a hotel and a brewery. And, somehow, each generation manages to find the right balance between tradition and the required amount of renovation to keep abreast of the tastes of visitors.

The right balance for ten generations

Generation number 10 has been running the Löwenbräu for five years now: The thirty-year-old Hans-Günter Wirth and his wife Maria. The transition has been seamless, as mother and father Wirth are still involved. Are there no problems when Wirth Junior has new ideas? "Nonsense! I am really lucky to have the whole family involved", says Hans-Günter Wirth. "My wife and I can learn a lot from my parents and we can rely on their help. It is perfect. It means that we can gradually get used to everything."

In this place where familiar equanimity and appreciation reign, a real harmonious offering thrives: In their own brewery, the Wirths produce a beer that is well-known beyond the village borders and that attracts hundreds of thirsty people to the beer garden in summer. The beer garden stands where the Bierkeller used to be. And, in the guesthouse with its charming wood panelling and the stucco ceiling from a bygone era, Hans-Günter Wirth offers his services as a beer sommelier – and not just with the beer from the Löwenbräu; but also with select craft beers from the region.

After enjoying a three-course meal with accompanying beers, you can only agree with the junior chef: "Beer is no longer a simple drink for the masses to enjoy in pubs and beer gardens. It can now definitely keep up with wine. And it actually goes better with many dishes." For example with carp in a beer and mustard sauce – a dish that sees many locals make the pilgrimage to the Löwenbräu in Adelsdorf.
