Green meadows and splendid hop gardens under a blue and white sky – the Holledau offers an impressive panorama. The scent of fresh blossom hangs in the air. It is quiet and calm - only the murmuring of the streams and the singing of the birds can be heard. But the closer the visitor gets to the Bavarian town of Abensberg near Kelheim, the louder it gets: The powerful sounds of brass instruments and heavy bass pump out of the Live club on the main square.

'I make hearty, solid, very modern, Bavarian pop music.'

On the stage is Maria Reiser, dressed in a traditional Bavarian dirndl and warming up her audience. Her songs have very little to do with traditional folk or zither music. “I make hearty, solid, very modern, Bavarian pop music - combined with Bavarian dialect acrobatics”, says the 36-year-old. Her unusual style has brought the singer international success.

From the soul to the world: Powerful sounds meet Bavarian dialect

Maria Reiser knew from a young age that she would be a professional musician. She studied music and plays guitar, piano and drums. From the start, her passion was for pop music. “I grew up with this music”. Despite her love of commercial pop music, the Bavarian singer also felt the traditions of her homeland were important. She therefore lets typically Bavarian elements flow through her art, such as the strong, earthy sound of brass instruments and the Bavarian dialect.

“Using dialect is the best and most authentic way for me to express myself, to speak from the soul,“ says Maria Reiser. “In my music I live the Bavarian traditions through my lyrics, my videos and by wearing the national costume. That’s my way of bring traditions into modern life.”

When an old sausage becomes a pop music hit

The mother of two finds plenty of ideas for her songs in her everyday life. “For example, if I clear an old sausage out from behind a cupboard, I get the inspiration for a new song about a sausage sandwich.” Whether she is cleaning, shopping, drinking coffee or simply watching other people – Maria Reiser finds inspiration everywhere. A notepad or recording device is always at hand.

Every now and then Maria Reiser, as a Bavarian free spirit, needs new impressions – far away from Abensberg. Then the young woman journeys to other continents, such as Africa or Asia. The foreign musical sounds flow into her songs. “Music is the language of the heart in all the different cultures. I have drawn on these influences to develop my own language,” declares Maria Reiser.

The singer could never leave Abensberg for good: It is part of who she is. “There’s a saying: Only those who have roots can fly! Without them I couldn’t be as creative as I am, or live the way I live. My origins are always with me and add the basic flavour to everything I do,” she explains.

Experience modern Bavaria up close and personal

Success is proving her right: Along with many young people, more and more older guests are coming to her concerts - and are surprised by what they find. Instead of cabaret or zither music, they experience Bavarian pop music with modern rhythms and loud bass notes. Maria Reiser describes her music as “Bavaria 2.0” or “Bavaria Deluxe” - which was also the name of her first album.

The best way for visitors to learn more about Bavarian pop music is live at one of her concerts. Her current tour dates can be found on her homepage www.mariareiser.com. And the end is nowhere in sight: Maria Reiser is currently writing new songs for her second album.
